Hello you, almighty, superhuman, one of a kind, irreplaceable being,
I thought I would write you a letter. I thought that it is a time we paused for a second and had a chat.
Let me remind you of what happened this morning. You woke up, you checked your emails, you got dressed, you walked your dog or fed your cat, you woke your kids up, you got them dressed, you got them in a car and dropped them off at a childminder’s, you ran to the train station, you grabbed a paper, you then stood in the train carriage unable to move while frantically checking your emails, your twitter, your facebook all while mentally forming a day’s to-do list in your head. You arrive at your desk, you sit down, you grab a coffee and off you go… your working day begins. You write, you speak, you answer questions, you make calls, you have a meeting, you reply to your emails and return calls, you do not stop, you eat your lunch at your desk while frantically checking your emails. In the end of your day you run home and while standing on the train surrounded by other superhumans you think to yourself – I ran around all day, I feel drained and exhausted but achieved so little.
And this happens day after day. You have a job that you love but those little things that just have to be done are slowing you down and leaving you feeling unproductive, overworked, overwhelmed and simply longing for more.
People nowadays have fallen into habit of doing everything themselves because it is “good” to be superhuman, because it is “good” to be almighty. But is it? Deep down are you simply afraid to give up control or reluctant to spend money to pay for help? I bet that you are simply afraid to let go.
The most successful people I know delegate everything except what they love to do and what they are exceptionally good at. This enables them to be more productive and actually enjoy life.
A friend of mine is an exceptionally successful estate agent, he loves selling houses and this is all he wants to do – deals. But unfortunately he is stuck completing paperwork, ticking boxes on multiple check lists and attending management meetings. Don’t let this be your fate!
People hire cleaners not because they don’t know how to clean but because their time could be spent better and more efficiently doing something else, like spending time with their family or reading a book. People don’t go to restaurants because they don’t know how to cook, people don’t go to a car wash because they don’t know how to wash their car. You have to learn to be more by being less!
The statistics show that unfortunately most entrepreneurs spend less than 30% of their time focusing on the one thing they went into business for in the first place. They seem to be doing everything else but the one thing they love!
Stop trying to be everything and everyone, be yourself, find your passion, the skill that you are excellent at and put all of your energy in perfecting that skill, and delegate everything else. This is the only way to success!
